$533M Mega Millions jackpot victor revealed to claim cash

A New Jersey production manager stepped out of obscurity on Friday to reveal himself as the newest millionaire-by-chance after a $2 Mega Millions ticket he bought at a gas station last month yielded him a jackpot of more than a half billion dollars.

The prize is the largest lottery win in New Jersey history, and the fourth-highest Mega Millions jackpot ever.

Wahl said he ran upstairs and told his wife, "We get to go on vacation!"

He said he's not regular lottery player, but made a decision to play after talking to a coworker about how they'd retire if they won.

And his lucky numbers? He selected easy pick tickets, meaning he let the numbers be chosen randomly.

'For us the plan is to do a lot of good things with it, ' Wahl said. It's not only life changing money for me but it's life changing for others.

At New Jersey Lottery headquarters Friday, Wahl was handed the traditional oversized check.

That drawing was two weeks ago.

The lump-sum option totaled $324.6 million, but after 24 per cent in federal taxes and eight per cent for the state, Wahl is taking $220.7million home, according to acting lottery executive director John White.

He said he will share the jackpot with "family and friends who struggle every day", and might indulge in his dream of restoring a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette. He also urged anyone who might know him to give the victor "the space they deserve".

The winning ticket was sold on March 30 at a Lukoil station in Riverdale, New Jersey.

Wahl, originally from MI, now lives in New Jersey.

An analysis by The Record and Northjersey.com found that the biggest Mega Millions winners usual take about 12 days to come forward. Lottery officials say it's not unusual for winners to wait even longer. He said he was getting on a flight Friday night, but wouldn't say where he was going.
