5bn Views 'Despacito' Briefly Dethroned by 'Palestine Fans — YouTube Hacker Coup

Before the removal of the video, the hackers altered the cover image of the video with masked people holding guns.

The most streamed song of all times, "Despacito" earlier created the record of reaching fastest 2 billion views on Youtube in just 154 hours of its release.

Other impacted musicians reportedly included Shakira, Chris Brown, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. In a statement to The Verge, a VEVO spokesperson confirmed the hack has now been contained. "We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach". All the videos have since returned to the site, Pitchfork reports.

Following the hack of Vevo's YouTube channel, users who tried to play the highly popular song were returned with a "Video is unavailable" error.

The videos themselves did not appear to be changed in any way, but the hackers - who went by Prosox and Kuroi'sh in their posts - wrote their names under several videos.

Most videos were back up by early today USA time but some still had defaced captions, which boasted of hacking by a duo calling themselves Prosox and Kuroi'SH.

One of the hackers claimed on Twitter that it was just a simple script that caused the change, rather than any brute force intrusion into their accounts.

Vevo was previously hacked in September 2017 by the group OurMine when over 3TB of internal data was stolen and leaked online.

The account has also said its new targets are YouTubers Jake and Logan Paul.

While numerous videos have since been changed back to their original there are some which still show the altered title.
