Bruce McArthur charged with 8th count of first-degree murder

The latest alleged victim named in the Bruce McArthur investigation came to Canada eight years ago after spending nearly 100 days on a ship from Sri Lanka in an effort to "save his life", a friend said.

Accused serial killer Bruce McArthur was subsequently charged with an eighth count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of the Scarborough man, who police believe was killed in 2015.

Idsinga said Kanagaratnam has family living in Canada but was not on file as a missing person.

Toronto police were able to identify Kanagaratnam with the help of an worldwide government agency after circulating a photo of him that was found during their investigation.

McArthur's latest alleged victim breaks the mold as police don't believe Kanagaratnam was part of the LGBTQ community in Toronto, nor do they believe he frequented the shelter system. "But we don't get that much welcome to Canada at that time".

"Mr. Kanagaratnam is the male depicted in the previously released John Doe photograph", Idsinga said.

Selim Esen, 44, Abdulbasir Faizi, 44, Majeed Kayhan, 58, Andrew Kinsman, 49, Dean Lisowick, 47, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Skandaraj Navaratnam, 40.

Toronto police have scheduled a press conference for 10:30 a.m.to update their investigation.

While he said police intend to comb at least 70 properties linked to McArthur in the coming months, Idsinga declined to say if investigators expect to unearth further alleged victims.

The exact cause of death has also not been determined at this point. Police believe Kanagaratnam was killed between September 3 and December 14, 2015.

On Friday, police announced that they had identified a dead man who is believed to be another alleged victim of McArthur.

August 2017 _ Police launch Project Prism to investigate the disappearances of Esen and Kinsman.

The murder of Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam has now been added to the growing list of charges against Toronto resident McArthur. As recently as six weeks before McArthur's arrest, the force, including Chief Mark Saunders, said there was no indication the disappearances were the work of a serial killer. Police have not said whether Mahmudi had any sort of relationship with McArthur. The photo, which seems to be of a deceased man, was found on McArthur's computer during the police investigation.

McArthur, 66, apparently showed no emotion while in court today.

The victims were all adult men, a lot of them with known ties in Toronto's LGBTQ community.
