Coli outbreak in 7 states

Coli outbreak in 7 states

Almost three dozen people have been infected in an E. coli outbreak linked to chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Ariz., region, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday.

In the Northeastern megalopolis, Pennsylvania has nine cases, neighboring New Jersey has seven, NY and CT have two each.

No word on what caused it.

The symptoms of E. coli include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the CDC. Discard any lettuce if unsure of whether it is romaine. More severe cases can result in hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

An outbreak of E. coli with no known source has spread to 7 states, with at least 17 people infected.

It was the O157:H7 strain of E. coli that sickened 25 people who ate leafy greens including romaine lettuce last November and December.

Before purchasing romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eating it at a restaurant, consumers should confirm with the store or restaurant that the romaine lettuce did not come from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, the New Jersey Department of Health advised.

"Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and Romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten", the CDC reported.

The advice is based on interviews with 28 of the ill individuals in which 93% of them reported consuming romaine lettuce within the week they began feeling sick. Humans also have this bacterium in their guts and the E.Coli illness occurs when these bacteria exceed a healthy number and start multiplying freely.

Earlier this week researchers in Canada published a study on a patch that could alert consumers to the presence of potentially harmful bacteria such as E. coli.

They all became infected between March 22 and March 31, and range in age from 12 to 84 years old. In a race against time, they are trying to figure out exactly what food is causing the multi-state outbreak so they can remove it from the food supply before too many other people become sick or possibly die.

However, the CDC has no clue from where the E. Coli bacteria has been contracted by the patient in OH, as no restaurant, food, or grocery store were discovered as possible sources for the E. Coli infection.
