Colorado teachers plan Monday walkout to call for higher pay, better funding

These demonstrations shut down school districts across both states as the educators protested cuts in pay, benefits, and school funding. They will wear red, as have other teachers protesting low pay in other parts of the country.

Some district teachers will head to the Capitol.

The Asiakwa location of the Quality Education Now (QEN) project under the SOS Childrens Village Ghana (SOSCV) has organised a three- day capacity building workshop for pre-school teachers from public and private schools in the East Akim Municipality.

Crowding into the rotunda of the Oklahoma State Capitol, the teachers lobbied lawmakers to pass a tax package that would raise another $200 million for schools.

After seeing teachers in other states agitate for more funding, Colorado educators are taking their turn.

Nearly thirty Oklahoma schools have announced cancellation for Wednesday's classes and admitted that if they do not see a legislative change, the protests could continue through the week.

"The Denver Public Schools Board of Education and Superintendent Tom Boasberg have been working extraordinarily hard and in partnership with superintendents across the state to press our state government to restore education funding to our schools and ensure our students and our educators receive the supports and compensation they deserve".

As a result? For one thing, the CEA says, teachers it recently surveyed reported spending an average of $656 yearly on school supplies and expenses for students. She said teams of educators from around the state will continue to go to the capitol to lobby lawmakers for more education funds. They are also hoping to secure a stable retirement program. On March 30, so many teachers staged a "sickout" that 29 school districts were forced to cancel classes because they couldn't find enough substitute teachers. "I guarantee you somewhere today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent doesn't have any money to take care of them".

Teachers in Arizona are voting this week on whether to stage a classroom walkout, after previously conducting several walk-in protests in which they demonstrated outside their respective schools before walking in with students to conduct classes.

"People fear the unknown", said Nusrat, an economics major.

That wave has notably seen teachers in West Virginia get a 5% pay raise last month after a nine-day strike.
