Commonwealth Games: England men & women reach rugby sevens semis

Olympic champions Australia survived a scare against Fiji to top Pool A and set up a semi-final with Canada at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, while New Zealand will face England in the other encounter on Sunday.

The champions put Ware across as Mocenecagi watched on from off the field to extend their lead to 19-0, only for the try to be ruled out when a video replay showed the 23-year-old had lost control of the ball over the line.

The New Zealand women's side upset Australia 17-12 in their Commonwealth Games final.

Etene Nanai-Seturo and Regan Ware scored first half tries to ensure New Zealand regained the Commonwealth Games men's rugby sevens gold with a 14-0 victory over Fiji, while a sensational Kelly Brazier effort gave their women a maiden title.

The victor of that match will progress through to the semi-finals and the loser will be out of medal contention.

The ball bounced back off the post but fell fortuitously into Kurt Baker's hands, who booted the ball into touch to seal the gold medal for New Zealand.

It was a one-sided men's final as New Zealand killed off the game with two early converted tries against a ragged Fijian defence.

The BlitzBoks will face Fiji in the semifinals of the Sevens at the Commonwealth Games.

England's greater experience as a series core team was evident with Natasha Hunt and Emily Scarratt both scoring tries after Wales were caught napping after conceding penalties, the latter coasting past two defenders slowly walking back to their own line.

"Both teams had a disrupted build up with injury and illness affecting their squads".

Woodman, the highest ever women's Sevens try-scorer, was inconsolable following the gold medal match in Rio after she was sin-binned during her side's loss.

"Not many guys in this team would know the feeling of a gold medal", Mikkelson added.
