So skipping on one update could be a threat to device's security and the users might not feel safe while using their devices.

A large number of Android manufacturers (OEMs) are skipping security patches but are lying to users about it, according to the team at Security Research Lab (SRL), a Berlin-based cyber-security firm.

SRL states that despite the present situation, it's a vast improvement over 2016, as told by a report from Duo - a time when only 17% of Android phones and tablets were running the most recent patch. "Probably for marketing reasons, they just set the patch level to nearly an arbitrary date, whatever looks best". The Android security updates is an important aspect of an Android smartphone's security firewall.

What are your thoughts on a gesture-based navigation system for Android? Devices from those manufacturers had, on average, zero to one missing patch that was claimed to have been installed.

Google is due to release another new Developer Preview of the mobile operating system, and the final release is scheduled for Q3 of this year. Of course, Google is the best at sticking to security updates, but owning the Google Pixel 2 isn't critical to staying safe as an Android user.

The researchers discovered manufacturers of low-end chipsets like Mediatek and Hisilicon missed more updates on average than powerhouses Qualcomm and Samsung.

There is also the possibility that instead of patching through updates, phone makers simply remove or alter the feature that might have caused the security vulnerability.

Google releases Android security patches each month in the form of the Android Security Bulletin. It also reassured that even with patches missing, it would be hard for a bad actor to hack an Android device.

Google said it is investigating the claims and will push any vendor to bring their devices into compliance.
