India's BJP MLA arrested for 'rape'

Within an hour of registering three cases in connection with the Unnao incident, sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) picked up rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for in-depth quizzing in the wee hours of Friday.

Before being produced in the Court on Saturday, Kuldeep Singh Sengar said, "I have faith in judiciary".

Addressing reporters on Friday, Adityanath said that his government will not compromise on the case irrespective of the position of the accused. DGP O.P, Singh said a FIR against the MLA was done "strictly as per the allegation of the victim which do not stand proved so far" and so the MLA deserved respect.

Singh drawn flak from all quarters after he came out in support of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is facing rape charges, saying that no one could rape a mother of three children. The Yogi Adityanth-led government has been fighting fire ever since the rape survivor attempted to immolate herself outside the CM's residence last Sunday to demand action. Victim's father died on Tuesday. A team also visited the crime scenes in Makhi village and examined family members, witnesses and hospital officials where the rape victim and her father were taken for treatment. "Once we procure substantial evidence, we will go ahead with the arrest of the MLA and his henchmen", disclosed a senior CBI officer engaged with the investigation. The family of the victim had also alleged that the accused MLA's brother, Atul Singh Sengar, had thrashed the victim's father on April 3 for refusing to withdraw the FIR over the rape.

The court, which is expected to pass an order tomorrow, took strong objection to the delay in the MLA's arrest, as it sought details of the action taken by the government in the matter.

The Uttar Pradesh government had asked the CBI to take over the inquiry into the alleged rape of the girl and the death of her father in judicial custody.

Sengar, a four-time MLA, enjoys an vast clout, cutting across party lines, in rural areas of Unnao district, a semi-urban area about 70 km from Lucknow.

The Allahabad High Court took up suo motu cognisance of the case on Wednesday and on Thursday took a strong notice of the delay in the accused MLA's arrest.
