Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who died in 1973, will also earn the prestigious honor at the organization's 33rd annual ceremony at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, where the Rock Hall is based. This year was a little different, though, as the Hall also officially recognized singles for the first time, creating a new (and seemingly limitless) category for songs that shaped the course of rock music, from a couple of the earliest to some psych-rock staples of the "60s". They performed together, singing crowd favorites like "Livin' on a Prayer", "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "It's My Life".

Stern compared Bon Jovi's sales numbers to the paltry number of "The Bubonic Plague", which killed 15 million and other comparisons endearing to Stern fans.

After an "In memoriam" montage of those who passed in the a year ago, Heart's Anne Wilson and Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell delivered a tribute to Chris Cornell.

Raised in segregated North Carolina, Simone became a passionate advocate for racial equality, with her best-known song perhaps the civil rights anthem "To Be Young, Gifted and Black".
