Third Death reported from Synthetic Marijuana

Statewide, since the synthetic cannabinoid outbreak began March 7, 107 people in Central Illinois and the Chicago area have experienced severe bleeding, IDPH reported Monday. Symptoms included coughing up blood, blood in urine, a severe bloody nose, bleeding gums and/or internal bleeding, according to the statement. Health officials have warned that Spice is not safe to use. It is used in commercial products for killing rodents and other pests.

It can be made from any one of dozens of chemical compounds manufactured in labs in China, the US and eastern Europe. Foil packets of the drug are often sold over the counter at convenience stores, sometimes deceptively labeled as "herbal incense" or "potpourri".

Officials say the chemicals can be "unpredictable, harmful and deadly".

The chemicals are similar to those found in natural marijuana.

Although arrests have been made in response to these recent cases, arrests for sold synthetic cannabinoids that test for being illegal usually occur after someone is already hurt.

"Acute kidney injury requiring hospitalization and dialysis in several patients reportedly having smoked synthetic cannabinoids has also been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention". NPS are unregulated mind-altering substances that have become newly available on the market and are meant to produce the same effects as illegal drugs.

"Each day we've seen the number of cases rise", said IDPH director Nirav D. Shah, who emphasized that "synthetic cannabinoids are unsafe".

HEALTH- Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a bleeding outbreak advisory regarding synthetic marijuana.

Anyone who has a reaction was told to call 911 or go to the emergency room, officials said.

From 2010 to 2015, the number of poisonings from toxic exposures surged across the United States, revealing 456 cases involving synthetic cannabinoids, according to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

OLPD said anyone who has used synthetic marijuana should seek medical attention, as it can take days or weeks for symptoms to appear.
