At Least 19 Killed in Fighting Between Myanmar Army, Rebels

The fighting erupted at Muse town yesterday in which nineteen people have been killed so far.

About 32 people, including 27 civilians, three policemen, and two local paramilitary troopers were injured in the attack.

Rights defenders say clashes in northern Myanmar near the China border have ramped up in recent months as the worldwide community focuses on the Rohingya crisis in the west of the country.

Suspected ethnic minority insurgents have launched attacks in eastern Myanmar, leaving 19 people dead and 29 wounded.

The violence was between the military and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, or TNLA, one of several insurgent groups fighting for more autonomy in the north.

Pictures of burned out vehicles and armed men running for cover spread quickly on social media. "It is just a destructive terrorist attack".

TNLA spokesman Mai Aik Kyaw told Agence France-Presse that they attacked joint military and militia posts in the Shan state town of Muse and on a road to Lashio.

Last month, fighting in the northern state of Kachin displaced more than 5,000 residents.

At least nine activists have been charged under Myanmar's draconian Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession Law, according to statements released by Human Rights Watch and Fortify Rights after protests were organized in four cities across Myanmar in the past week.

The TNLA claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on Facebook saying they were a response to recent Myanmar army offensives against another armed group, the Kachin Independence Army, or KIA.

"We feel sorry for civilian deaths".

The insurgency in the northeast - which is separate from the Rohingya crisis to the west - is one of some two dozen ethnic minority rebellions that have roiled Myanmar's border regions since independence in 1948. Two of the attacks occurred at military bases and the other at a bridge.
