Cannes Film Festival bosses sign gender equality pledge

The Cannes film festival signed a charter Monday vowing to push for parity between men and women by 2020.

Other women taking part included Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay, Marion Cotillard, Salma Hayek, and Patty Jenkins.

'We demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so they can best reflect the world in which we live, ' announced Cate Blanchett, calling for 'a world that allows all of us, in front and behind the camera, to thrive shoulder to shoulder with out male colleagues'. In contrast, 1,866 male directors have been selected in the festival's 71-year history.

That's a disparate fact that was protested this week by female icons across the industry in the coastal resort town, where 82 actresses, directors, writers and producers congregated on the festival's famous steps.

14 de mayo de 2018, 13:43Paris, May 14 (Prensa Latina) Mexican film "Comprame un revolver"(Buy me a Gun) had today its world premiere in the Directors´ Fortnight of the 71st Cannes Film Festival, a movie based on the impact of drug trafficking on that society.

Cannes has come under repeated criticism in recent years over its poor record of selecting female filmmakers.

Of the 21 films in competition this year, three are directed by women. Only one woman has ever taken home the top prize: Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993. Toronto and San Sebastian have already agreed to sign, organizers said, and will host events at their respective film festivals later in the year.

Its key commitments include the compilation of statistics to record the gender of the filmmakers and key crew of all submissions; a promise to improve transparency around selection processes by publicly listing the members of its selection and programming committees; and to work toward parity on their executive boards.

"Even if there is a higher proportion of women showing films at Cannes, we're aware that it's not enough", said Mr Fremaux.

"Films like Tamasha and Befikre were shot extensively in this part of the world", she added further.

As part of the debut Saudi presence at the global festival, nine short films by young Saudi directors were screeed in the Short Film Corner, including Is Sumiyati Going to Hell? by Meshal Aljaser, about a maid working for racist employers, and Alkaif by Seba Alluqmani, about the country's coffee tradition.

After the signing, filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski noted it was Blanchett's birthday, and attendees serenaded the actress with a rendition of "Happy Birthday".
