Facebook Reportedly Planning Their Own Cryptocurrency

The inclusion of David Marcus, who is a sitting member of the Coinbase board of directors, into the blockchain team points out that Facebook could be planning something related to cryptocurrencies. You should not treat any information on smartereum.com as a call to make any particular decision regarding cryptocurrency usage, legal matters, investments, taxes, cryptocurrency mining, exchange usage, wallet usage, initial coin offerings (ICO), etc. Facebook's corporate development team started looking at how the social platform could use the new technology. Marcus believes that cryptocurrencies have plenty of room to improve their performance and that it's possible Facebook could use the technology in the future. "We don't have anything further to share.", Facebook said in a statement to Engadget.

Bitcoin might be the most popular cryptocurrency at the moment, but it is definitely not the only one. Facebook Coin might have a fight if it wants to compete with Ethereum, Bitcoin, or other cryptocurrencies flourishing on the market now.

Zuckerberg plans on looking into the risk of (digital currency) being hard to control.

So we know this for sure: a blockchain team has been created at Facebook - but we do not know it's goal, yet.

Facebook started studying blockchain nearly a year ago, when a member of its corporate development team, Morgan Beller, began looking at how the social platform could use the emerging technology.

According to tech website Cheddar, the social media giant is allegedly "exploring" incorporating cryptocurrency onto their platform with a potential eye towards payment transactions.

Marcus is no rookie when it comes to this field because before he was working for the company, he was the president of PayPal, and was an early investor in Bitcoin.

The venture would likely see Facebook make "strategic acquisitions" in the cryptocurrency industry as it seeks to build out its blockchain infrastructure. This is one of the reasons why it has had a history of purchasing companies it feels has a better technological grasp than itself in particular areas of interest.

It is noted that the cryptocurrency will be created to process electronic payments within the social network.
