First Vape-Pen Victim: E-Cigarette Explosion Killed Florida Man, Probe Finds

38-year-old former CNBC producer Tallmadge D'Elia was killed earlier this month in what FEMA is calling the first death caused by an e-cigarette explosion, the Daily Dot reports.

Tallmadge Wakeman D'Elia, also known as "Wake", died on May 5 as a result of a "projectile wound to the head", medical examiners said.

According to the report, the pen he used was a "mod" type, or a modified e-cigarette created to be customizable.

Reports state officials found the deceased man spotting a wound to his top lip and burns on his body.

D'Elia's death has been explained as "accidental", with 13WMAZ reporting that he suffered 80 per cent burns. "Defective e-cigarette batteries have caused fires and explosions, some of which have resulted in serious injuries", states the site.

Dale Kleine, a neighbor who identified the body, said she saw smoke coming out of the roof of the house, reported FOX 6.

This is the first death from an e-cigarette explosion in the US.

38-year-old man from Florida was killed when the electronic cigarette he was Smoking exploded. These include using vape devices with added safety features, replacing wet or damaged batteries, avoiding charging overnight and using only e-cigarette chargers. "While the failure rate of the lithium-ion batteries is very small, the consequences of a failure, as we have seen, can be severe and life-altering for the consumer".

The owner of Lizard Juice, an e-cigarette retailer in Florida, said he does not think such vaping pens are "safe enough".

Protect your vape from extreme temperatures by not leaving it in direct sunlight or in a freezing vehicle overnight.

A representative from Smok-E-Mountain told the news outlet that its vapes don't explode and said the fire was likely to be started because of the atomizer or a battery issue.

The agency cautions users from carrying e-cig batteries loose in their pockets, "especially where they might come into contact with coins, keys or other metal objects which can cause the battery to short out".
