Libyan Dissident Belhaj 'Gratified' by Rare Apology From UK - Lawyer

52-year-old Mr Belhaj was previously a leading member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), an Islamist group which waged an insurgency against the Gadaffi regime throughout the 1990's, including several assassination attempts on Gadaffi himself.

But he had always said that he would drop his case for an apology and an admission of liability by the British Government and a nominal sum of £3 - £1 from each of the defendants in the civil action. For more than six years I have made clear that I had a single goal in bringing this case: justice. "Now, at last, justice has been done", he said.

Following the settlement, Mr Belhaj said in a statement: "I welcome and accept the Prime Minister's apology and I extend to her and the Attorney General my thanks and honest goodwill".

The British government accepted the couple "were subjected to a harrowing ordeal which caused them significant distress", and said that it had reached "a full and final settlement" with them both. Britain has made a wrong right'. A great society does not torture; does not help others to torture; and, when it makes mistakes, it accepts them and apologizes.

She was released shortly before giving birth. "I believe this is such a case".

He read out the letter Mrs May had written to the couple, which said the Government's actions had "contributed" to their detention, rendition and suffering. "I thank the British government for its apology and for inviting me and my son to the United Kingdom to hear it. But by today's settlement I look forward to rebuilding my life with dignity and honor".

He added: "Further to that, the British Government have, quite rightly, given an apology".

"The U.K. government shared information about you with its global partners". We should have done more to reduce the risk that you would be mistreated.

She told Mr Wright: "Can he tell us whether the investigations that have gone into settling this claim have uncovered whether what happened here is part of the dark side of Tony Blair's deal in the desert with Gaddafi in 2004?"

The role that the UK's overseas intelligence agency, MI6, played in facilitating their arrest in southeast Asia and subsequent rendition by the CIA to torture and detention in Libya first came to light in a trove of documents discovered by Human Rights Watch in Tripoli in September 2011, and later documented in exhaustive detail.

In a statement issued by his lawyers, Belhaj said: "I welcome and accept the prime minister's apology, and I extend to her and the attorney general my thanks and honest goodwill". We wrongly missed opportunities to alleviate your plight: this should not have happened.

The UK government apologised for the illegal rendition of a former Libyan rebel commander back to Libya where he was tortured by the Qaddafi regime.

He said British agencies "were in some respects not prepared for the extreme demands suddenly placed on them" and were too slow to understand "the unacceptable practices of some of our global partners". "We sincerely regret our failures".
