Mark Dallas: Good Guy with a Gun Who Stopped Alleged School Shooter

A recently expelled student in IL is in custody after he opened fire near the gym of his former school, where seniors at Dixon High were gathered for graduation practice, at around 8am Wednesday. "The quick, fearless actions of Dixon Police Department School Resource Officer Mark Dallas stopped the gunman and saved many lives", said IEA President Kathi Griffin. The suspect continued to shoot at the officer and the officer returned fire, Howell said.

The city, about 90 miles west of Chicago and best known as the hometown of former president Ronald Regan, said all city schools were put on lockdown following the shooting.

The school resource officer confronted the suspect, who then fled from the school with the officer in pursuit, Howell said. He sustained non-life threatening injuries after he fired shots near the school's gymnasium. Dallas shot back, injuring the 19 year old.

Dixon Police Officer Mark Dallas shot and wounded the gunman.

Sauk Valley Media reports the incident happened during graduation practice. The collective bravery of people in the school saved many lives. When officers went inside the high school, they said they saw students and teachers barricaded in their classrooms as they should have been.

Authorities say students did exactly as they were trained to do when a school resource officer and a former student exchanged gunfire at a northern IL high school. He has been assigned as the Dixon High School Resource Officer for the past 5 years.

"I could not be more proud of the police officer and the way he responded to the situation", Howell said. Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellanno Jr. also praised the response of the officer. Authorities identified the school resource officer as Mark Dallas, who was hailed as a hero for his actions.

"All of a sudden out of nowhere you just hear pop pop pop!" said former student Brandon Stehl, who was at the school preparing for graduation. "His courageous actions saved a lot of lives".
