Sale of Cambodian newspaper sparks fears of crackdown on press freedom

The dismissal of Kay Kimsong, editor-in-chief of the English and Khmer-language editions of the Phnom Penh Post, was followed by the resignations in protest of at least four senior editorial personnel.

Editor-in-chief Kay Kimsong also refused and was dismissed. A new editor-in-chief, Joshua Purushotman was immediately installed.

"I trust my reporters and my editors and I think that being journalists, we made the right decision".

"The first thing they said was to take the article down, right now", said Ananth Baliga, one of the article's authors.

The story, which stays on the newspaper's homepage, detailed connections between the paper's new proprietor and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. It also described Ganapathy as leading a team managing "covert operations" for its clients.

The sale of the English-language daily, which has been largely critical of the government, was announced on Saturday by Australian businessman Bill Clough, who had owned the newspaper since 2008.

Kimsong was sacked on May 6, the day the article was published, and after he reportedly refused to take down the "damaging" story.

The amount Sivakumar paid and what has happened to the tax bill is unknown.

Australian tycoon sells Phnom Penh Post to Malaysian investor

"They said that as editor-in-chief I allowed the story about the sale of the Phnom Penh Post to be published".

"Media freedom is now an endangered commodity, with the demise of the Put up and the Cambodia Each day, Radio Free Asia thrown overseas and a few of their journalists positioned on trial, and impartial FM radio stations shut down", he mentioned.

Over 20 current and former staff members signed a statement, expressing their "disgust" after "representatives of the new owners" reached the office and "ordered" staff to remove the article from the newspaper's website, Al Jazeera reported.

Bill, who is chairman and publisher of the Post Media Co., Ltd, said in a statement that Siva is a well respected newspaper man, with an experienced journalist background, and represents a strong investment group from Malaysia.

The Post staff's intention was "to make [Sivakumar] look bad and while ignoring the context and that is not acceptable", he said. Under government-related projects on the company's website it lists "Cambodia and Hun Sen's entry into the Government seat". However there has been a recent crackdown on independent media. "I wish the fantastic journalists at The Post all the best", tweeted Brendan O'Byrne, the business editor.

Kem Sokha, head of the now dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), was arrested on September 3 amid a crackdown on critics of authoritarian Prime Minister Hun Sen who has ruled the Southeast Asian country for more than 30 years.

Cambodia plunged ten places in the 2018 Reporters Without Borders' press freedom index to number 142 out of 180 countries.

The Post's sale may indicate that Hun Sun's administration has decided that it no longer needs to allow a free media to operate in the country as a concession for getting Western aid, said Shawn Crispin, the Bangkok-based Southeast Asia representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonpartisan advocacy group based in NY.
