Salmonella outbreak leads to around a dozen more people falling sick

There have been at least 35 confirmed cases of salmonella reported in connection to an egg recall at Rose Acres Farm in Hyde County, according to the CDC.

Thirty-five people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup have been reported from nine states.

Rose Acre Farms issued the recall April 16 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the eggs had the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

Rose Acre Farms, in a statement later said that it is not only taking measures to correct deficiencies at the farm but is also ensuring that the farm meets the standards sets by the FDA and USDA. The eggs were sold under numerous brand names including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms and Sunshine Farms. Due to salmonella often being deeply dehydrating, treatment often focuses on replacing lost fluids and electrolytes, as well as courses of antibiotics if the immune system has been severely compromised. The eggs are sold under different brands in a variety of retailers, including Walmart. Last week, the health organization updated that list to include 13 more cases, spread across eight eastern seaboard states and Colorado.

If you think you bought contaminated eggs - do not eat them.

The figure marks an increase of 12 new salmonella cases since CDC first announced the outbreak almost a month ago.

Kratom or Mitragyna speciosa, an unregulated herbal supplement used to treat pain, anxiety, depression and symptoms of opioid withdrawal, has also been linked to three dozen non-salmonella-related deaths.

Initially, the FDA indicated in April that 22 illnesses had been reported.

Consumers who have purchased the eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

FDA explained that the eggs come in packaging from plant number P-1065 and with a date range of 011 by the date of 102 stamped on the carton.
