'Whitney' Trailer: Whitney Houston Documentary Aims To Hit All The Notes

Friends of Whitney Houston allege the singer was molested as a child by her cousin Dee Dee Warwick in a documentary that premiered today at the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, several filmmakers have been clamoring to tell the story of her life, but only one film has been officially authorized by Houston's family. "It made her question her sexual preference", she notes in the doc.

It seems that Whitney felt very ashamed of what happened to her and couldn't go to her mother to tell her. But there's also never-before seen archival footage, exclusive demo recordings, rare audio archives and original interviews with her loved ones.

Director Kevin Macdonald said in an interview with Vanity Fair that the accusation first came to his attention when Whitney's brother, Gary, said on-camera that he attributes his addiction issues to "being molested by a female family member".

Warwick, who was 18 years older than Houston, died in 2008. The documentary feature Whitney is an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston's life.

Whitney's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, is a star contributor on paper, but he clams up totally when Macdonald tries to steer the conversation towards drugs, with the revealingly sinister comment, "That's not what this film is about".

"There was something about her discomfort in her own skin, something about the way she presents or hides herself, her lack of overt sexuality", Macdonald told the publication.

She recalls Miss Houston saying: 'Mary, I was [abused] too. She seemed kind of asexual in a unusual way.

Still, the film circles back to relationships, including her marriage to Bobby Brown and close friendship with Robyn Crawford, who is described as Houston's "safety net". She was a attractive woman, but she was never particularly sexy. I think that only lasted quite a short time.

Whitney is out in the United Kingdom on 6 July 2018.
